In a quiet, green neighborhood just outside Antwerp, a 1950s terraced house was carefully renovated. The goal of the renovation was clear: to preserve the authentic charm and character of the home, while adapting it to today's standards of living.
The typical features of the 1950s – the bright façade, clean lines, and functional layout – were retained and subtly highlighted. At the same time, modern aspects were introduced, such as energy-efficient systems, an open living area with abundant natural light, and a renewed kitchen and bathroom using contemporary materials.
The project began with a full survey and a technical assessment of the existing house. Damp in the cellar, an outdated electrical installation and single glazing determined the order of the works. Investing first in the building envelope — roof and wall insulation, new joinery with high-performance glazing and a ventilated bathroom — cut energy use substantially without touching the characteristic façade composition.
On the ground floor a load-bearing internal wall was replaced by a steel portal frame. Living room, dining area and kitchen now flow into one another, with sightlines running through to the garden. The original terrazzo floor in the entrance hall was restored and complemented with oak in the living area — a deliberate choice to keep the layers of the house legible rather than erasing them.
Materials were selected for durability and recognisability: powder-coated steel, matte lacquered wood, natural stone and a muted palette of sand, sage and ink tones. Wherever possible, existing elements were reused — internal doors, hardware and light fittings were restored and given a second life, fully in line with PLMR's circular approach.
The result is a home that keeps its soul intact while being fully prepared for the future. A successful balance between nostalgia and modern comfort, in a peaceful, green setting on the edge of Antwerp.
